Springtime Films
By: Emily Eade
Spring is a time for love, flowers, and cinema. What can be better than being cozy in front of the TV or big screen, watching your favorite springtime movies? In the spirit of spring, here are some movies that can fulfill your genre of choice.
Romance and comedy tend to go hand in hand, especially when it comes to movies. Those who enjoy watching love blossom can enjoy romance movies such as ‘Eat, Pray, Love,’ ‘Pride and Prejudice,’ and ‘Notting Hill’ all fit the criteria. These springtime movies have an essence of what all hopeless romantics strive for, love and comfort. And for those who enjoy a good laugh, you can never go wrong with ‘Fever Pitch’, ‘Lady Bird’, and ‘Something’s Gotta Give’. Each film has its quirks but also a sense of humility.
If you enjoy a dramatic and compelling story, ‘Big Fish’, ‘Past Lives’, and ‘Virgin Suicides’ are all emotionally twisting, and heartwrenching springtime movies. ‘Big Fish’ grasps a complex relationship between father and son, and highlights the longing and regret for what has gone. ‘Past Lives’ explores the complexities of missed opportunities and going on with a “what if” scenario always at the back of your mind. Lastly, ‘Virgin Suicides’ shows the impact depression and pressure can have on young women. I warn you these movies aren’t for the faint of heart.
For thriller lovers, ‘Blue Velvet’, ‘Midsommar’, and ‘Prom Night’ all give a mysterious, horror twist to springtime. Each movie has a different vibe from one another. ‘Blue Velvet’ involves a mystery that needs to be solved, while in the process it shows how dark and twisted small towns can be. ‘Midsommar’ gives off the emotions of dread and discomfort as the film shows disturbing visuals of rituals. Lastly, ‘Prom Night’ shows the vengeance of a fatal accident that happened six years before.
Whether that film involves brutal deaths or traveling the world to find oneself, it gives off a feeling to encapsulate an energy that is ever so natural; the feeling of warmth, and vibrance in the color. Although each of these movies holds different themes and is a part of different genres, they all give off a similar springtime ambiance.
